To create this more comprehensive view of your enterprise, it all starts with building the record data for your records. Simply choose a data source and we'll create a set of record fields for your record data. You can adjust your record fields, and even extend your data set by creating custom record fields that calculate and transform your data to fit your business needs.
After setting up your record data, set yourself up for faster app development and smarter data by establishing record type relationships. These relationships allow you to easily reference related record data from other record types without building extensive queries or database views.

Once you've configured your record data, you want to consider how users will vie and navigate a set of records. For example, in a Support Case record type, users may want to see all support cases that are currently open and overdue so they can help close those cases.
To easily display multiple records, you can create a record list. The record list is a single, drillable list that users can search and filter to find records. You can choose which data appear in the list, provide filters so users can control how they view the records, and add record list actions so they can take action directly from the list of records.
Not only is the record list a navigational tool, you can also reuse the record list as a display element throughout your applications. You can reference the record list as a page in a site, or you can use the record type as the source of a read-only grid to automatically display your record list configuration.
Now that users can interact with a set of records, you'll want to create a way for them to drill into and act upon each record.
In Appian, each row of your enterprise data is represented as a record. But a record is more than just a row of data. Records provide a more comprehensive view of your data by using record views to surface different insights about your data depending on a user's interests and needs. For example, in a support case record, you could create one record view for a support engineer that details the case issue and type, and another record view for a case manager that contains the customer's satisfaction score and case history.
From the context of these views, you can add related actions so users can start enterprise processes to update, add, or remove information about the record. Using record views and related actions, you can unite people, process, and data in one place.
In the last part of your configuration, you'll want to secure your records so they're only available to the appropriate users.
To determine who can view which records, you can apply record-level security on your record type's with data sync enabled. With record-level security, you can configure your security requirements more dynamically by using record fields, related record fields, groups and more in your configurations. For example, in a Support Case record type, you only want support engineers to view their assigned cases. By adding record-level security, you can specify that if a user is found in the
assignedEngineer field, then they can see a record.
Since you're defining security directly on the record type, all you have to do is save your record type for your security to be automatically applied anywhere the record type is referenced. This means that your record views, lists, and interfaces will automatically apply your security requirements. Now, a support engineer will see a different list of records than a case manager, who may only be able to see cases assigned to their customers.
