Appian Composer is Appian's AI-assisted approach to building applications. It helps you turn business requirements into an application plan, generate a starting point from that plan, and build out a working application.

How Appian Composer supports app development

Appian Composer covers two major phases of application development:

  • Planning: In the Plan view, Composer translates your business requirements into an application plan, a structured model of your application's activities, actions, personas, data model, screens, business rules, and processes. When the plan is ready, Composer generates user stories and can generate foundational design objects to give your team a head start.
  • Building: In the Build view, Composer acts as a developer agent that can take those user stories and turn them into configured, working design objects. Or, you can describe what you need in natural language to create or edit objects directly. Composer detects dependencies across your application, proposes a task plan, and executes it once you approve.

You can use Composer to create a plan, or start building without an application plan on a new or existing application. For brand-new applications, we recommend starting with a plan. It helps business users, developers, and subject matter experts align on what to build, and plans are optimized for Composer. This is also valuable for legacy modernization projects, where early alignment pays off as development moves forward.
