Set Up AI Claim Document Summary Module

On This Page
The capabilities described on this page are included in Appian's advanced and premium capability tiers. Usage limits may apply.

Prepare for setup

After installing the AI Claim Document Summary module, you must set it up before you use it with the Connected Claims Base application. This guide adds the Document Summary subprocess to the Create Claim, Create Document, and Complete Task process models, adds a delete node to the Delete Document process model, and displays the summary on the Claim Document interface.

System prerequisites

Your environment must meet the following requirements before you set up the AI Claim Document Summary module:

  • Appian platform running version 26.6 or greater.
  • A supported web browser.
  • Imported Connected Claims Base application version 2.0 or higher, which includes the following application containers:
    • Connected Claims Management Base (CCM)
    • CCM Studio Generated Objects
  • Imported AI Claim Document Summary module application containers, including:
    • CCM Add On: Documents Summary AI (CCM_DSAI)

Note:  The record type references in the expressions in this guide are environment-specific. Update them to reference the record types and relationships in your target environment.

Add the Document Summary node to the Create Claim process

This section integrates AI document summarization into the claim creation workflow of the AI Claim Document Summary module, so Connected Claims generates summaries when users upload documents during claim submission.

To add the AI Summarize Docs subprocess node to the CCM_Claim_Create process model:

  1. In the target environment, sign in as the deployment user.
  2. Go to Appian Designer.
  3. Open the Connected Claims Management Base application.
  4. Search for and open the CCM_Claim_Create process model.
  5. After the Store Documents subprocess node, add a new subprocess node called AI Summarize Docs.

  6. On the Setup tab of the AI Summarize Docs node, configure the subprocess with the following settings:
    • The subprocess will run: Asynchronously
    • Enable activity chaining into all initial nodes in the subprocess: Cleared
    • Run this process model: "CCM_DSAI_ClaimDocumentSummary_Update"
    • Reporting: Select Allow data from this subprocess to be included in reports on the parent process model.
    • Security: Clear Subprocess inherits security from parent process (unless overridden).
    • Input variable document (CCM_Document): Enter the expression in the next step.

    The Setup tab of the Configure AI Summarize dialog, with the subprocess set to run asynchronously, the CCM_DSAI_ClaimDocumentSummary_Update process model, and the document input variable

  7. For the document input variable, enter the following expression:

    1

    index(pv!claim['recordType!{d81cdd0e-c54d-4b8e-beec-b7ae37fefe7f-ccm}CCM_Claim.relationships.{341720e1-0b79-4f0c-ac48-789ee3fbeae3-ccm}documents'], tp!instanceindex, null)

    tointeger(
      max(
        {
          count(
            pv!claim['recordType!{d81cdd0e-c54d-4b8e-beec-b7ae37fefe7f-ccm}CCM_Claim.relationships.{341720e1-0b79-4f0c-ac48-789ee3fbeae3-ccm}documents']
          ),

Add the Document Summary node to the Create Document process

This section ensures that the AI Claim Document Summary module generates summaries whenever users add new documents to existing claims through the document creation process.

To add the AI Summarize Docs subprocess node to the CCM_ClaimDocument_Create process model:

  1. In Appian Designer, open the Connected Claims Management Base application.
  2. Search for and open the CCM_ClaimDocument_Create process model.
  3. Before the Incorporation Tag Script task, add a new subprocess node called AI Summarize Docs.

Add the Document Summary node to the Complete Task process

This section enables the AI Claim Document Summary module to summarize documents that users upload when they complete a task, so all claim-related documents receive AI analysis.

To add the AI Summarize Docs start process node to the CCM_Task_Complete process model:

  1. In Appian Designer, open the Connected Claims Management Base application.
  2. Search for and open the CCM_Task_Complete process model.
  3. After the Join Flows script task node, add a new start process node called AI Summarize Docs.

Add the Delete Document Summary node to the Delete Document process

This section ensures that when users delete documents from claims, the AI Claim Document Summary module also removes the associated AI summaries to maintain data consistency.

To add the Delete AI Summary node to the CCM_ClaimDocument_Delete process model:

  1. In Appian Designer, open the Connected Claims Management Base application.
  2. Search for and open the CCM_ClaimDocument_Delete process model.
  3. After the Set Inactive script task node, add a new Delete Records node called Delete AI Summary.

  4. On the Data Inputs tab of the Delete Records node, set the value of the Records input to the following expression:

    1
    2
    3
    4
    5
    6
    7

    rule!CCM_DSAI_QR_GetDocumentSummary(
      documentIds: pv!documents['recordType!{4fcbf8d2-f6f9-4a38-bbf1-d2722635282a-ccm}CCM_Document.fields.{11173308-3bb1-43ad-b63a-4ff680227037-ccm}documentId'],
      returnType: "OBJECT_ARRAY",
      executeWhen: a!isNotNullOrEmpty(
        pv!documents['recordType!{4fcbf8d2-f6f9-4a38-bbf1-d2722635282a-ccm}CCM_Document.fields.{11173308-3bb1-43ad-b63a-4ff680227037-ccm}documentId']
      )
    )

Display the Document Summary on the Claim Document interface

This section adds the AI Claim Document Summary display to the Claim Document interface, so users can view AI-generated document insights in the claim document view.

To display the document summary:

  1. In Appian Designer, open the Connected Claims Management Base application.
  2. Search for and open the CCM_Claim_RecordView_Documents interface.
  3. Directly above the call to rule!CCM_UTIL_ClaimDocumentViewer, which starts near line 333, add the following call to CCM_DSAI_ClaimDocumentsSummary_Display:

    1
    2
    3
    4

    rule!CCM_DSAI_ClaimDocumentsSummary_Display(
      brandingMap: local!brandingMap,
      selectedDocument: local!selectedDocument
    ),

    The CCM_Claim_RecordView_Documents interface with the CCM_DSAI_ClaimDocumentsSummary_Display call added above the CCM_UTIL_ClaimDocumentViewer call

Use the module after setup

After you set up the AI Claim Document Summary module, Connected Claims automatically generates AI-powered summaries of PDF documents uploaded to claims, and users can view the document insights directly in the claim document interface.
