Upgrading Appian on Kubernetes

On This Page

Overview

This page describes how to upgrade to new versions of Appian on Kubernetes for self-managed customers. This action includes upgrades to both the Appian operator and the Appian images.

Verify the current versions

This page assumes you are running the following:

  • Appian version 24.4 or later.
  • Appian Operator version 0.201.0 or later.

Note:  To set up process insights in your self-managed environment, you must be running Appian 26.6 or later.

If you are running an earlier version of either Appian or the Appian Operator, upgrade to these expected versions first before upgrading to the current release.

Tip:  To learn which Appian versions you want to upgrade to, see Self-Managed Support.

Verify the Appian version

To verify your current Appian version:

  1. Sign into your Appian environment as a designer or system administrator.
  2. In the header bar, click to open the navigation menu.
  3. Select About Appian.

Scroll or drag to pan · ⌘+/⌘− to zoom · Esc to closeimages/about_appian_dialog.png

Verify the Appian Operator version

To verify your current Appian Operator version, use kubectl to describe the operator pod in your cluster.

Download new artifacts

  1. Download the new Appian operator Helm chart.
  2. If you have set up process insights in your environment, download the new process insights Helm chart.
  3. Pull the new Appian operator and Appian container images.
  4. Push the new images to your organization's registry.

Upgrade the operator

Caution:  Starting with version 0.156.0, a new license file will be required to start the operator. For more information about requesting and importing the license file, see the Installing Appian on Kubernetes page.

Upgrading the Appian operator is as simple as running helm upgrade:

1
2
3
helm --namespace appian-operator upgrade appian-operator appian-operator-<APPIAN_OPERATOR_VERSION>.tgz \
   --reset-then-reuse-values \
   --wait

Note:  If you have restricted the Appian operator's cluster-wide access and installed the operator's controllers in additional namespaces, repeat this step once for each namespace - substituting --namespace appian-operator with --namespace <NAMESPACE>.

If you have any trouble upgrading the operator, see Troubleshooting Appian on Kubernetes.

Upgrade process insights

Note:  You must be running Appian 26.6 or later to set up process insights for a self-managed environment.

If you have set up process insights in your environment:

  1. In the process-insights-values.yaml file, update the appianImageTag to match the appianImageTag value in process insights Helm chart you downloaded.
  2. Run the following command:

    1

    helm upgrade appian-process-insights ./chart -f process-insights-values.yaml -n <namespace>

where ./chart is the location of the process insights Helm chart you downloaded.

Upgrade the Appian images

The following steps will upgrade the component images of the Appian site including webapp, data-server, and other components. This is typically done when there are new features released.

  1. Stop your Appian site.
  2. In the Appian CR configuration file, for each component, update the .spec.[COMPONENT].image.tag field to be the new version of the image.
  3. Restart your Appian site.

If you have any trouble upgrading Appian, see Troubleshooting Appian on Kubernetes.
