Appian for Windows shares the same offline capabilities as Appian Mobile, but some features behave differently. The following tables describe what's supported, what behaves differently, and what isn't available in the Appian for Windows app. Compatibility categories Appian for Windows capabilities fall into four categories: Supported: Works in the Appian for Windows app without limitations. Different from Appian Mobile: Works in the Appian for Windows app, but behaves differently than in Appian Mobile. Different from the web browser: Works in the Appian for Windows app, but behaves differently than in a web browser. Not supported: Doesn't work in the Appian for Windows app. Supported capabilities The following capabilities work in the Appian for Windows app the same way they work in Appian Mobile: Capability Notes Offline-enabled interfaces configured as site actions Users can navigate to the site page and fill out the form whether online or offline. Offline-enabled interfaces configured as tasks Users can open and fill out tasks assigned to them whether online or offline. Read-only offline-enabled interfaces Display offline-enabled interfaces as Interface type site pages. Custom task reports Use process task links to display task information on a site page. Partially compatible and compatible functions and components See the Appian Functions table for individual function compatibility with offline interfaces. See Design Interfaces for Offline Use for instructions on using the Appian Functions table to determine compatibility. Differences from Appian Mobile The following capabilities work in the Appian for Windows app, but behave differently than in Appian Mobile: Capability Appian Mobile behavior Appian for Windows behavior Component behavior Some components behave differently on mobile, such as converting panes to columns in pane layouts. See the "Appian Mobile considerations" section on each component page for details. Component behavior matches browser behavior. Connectivity detection Shows the offline icon when the device has no internet connection. Shows the offline icon when the app can't connect to the Appian server. A device can be connected to the internet but the app will still show as offline if it can't reach the server, such as when a VPN is required. Group-assigned tasks Users can accept group-assigned tasks from the mobile site task list or a custom task report. Users must open the task in a browser to accept, reject, reassign, or return it to all assignees. Pending forms Forms attempt to submit immediately if online. If offline, forms queue in Pending Forms and attempt to submit automatically when the device regains connectivity. Same as Appian Mobile, but if the submission doesn't succeed on the first try, the app retries every 15 minutes while connectivity is available. Data sync Syncs automatically every two hours and when the user signs in. Also syncs via push notifications, pull-to-refresh, loading the site task list, and loading Tempo pages. Syncs automatically every two hours, when the user signs in, and when the app regains connectivity to the server. Push notifications, pull-to-refresh, site task list, and Tempo pages aren't available. See Syncing data for offline use for a full description of sync triggers. Capabilities not supported in Appian for Windows The following capabilities aren't available in the Appian for Windows app: Capability Notes Network proxy servers Appian for Windows doesn't support being routed through an intermediary, such as a load balancer or corporate network proxy server. Mobile site task list This feature is only available in Appian Mobile. Use a custom task report to display tasks instead. Custom typefaces The app uses the default typeface, Open Sans. Online-only interfaces Interfaces that aren't enabled for offline use must be opened in a browser. The app displays an "Open in browser" link for these interfaces. Internationalization English is the only supported locale in Appian for Windows. Incompatible functions and components See the Appian Functions table for individual function compatibility with offline interfaces. See Design Interfaces for Offline Use for instructions on using the Appian Functions table to determine compatibility. Photo gallery access The app can't upload photos from or save photos to the Gallery in File Explorer. Users can upload from and save to the Pictures folder. Differences from the web browser Appian for Windows displays interfaces the same way a desktop browser does, so most interfaces look and behave the same. Unless listed in the following table, all capabilities that work in a browser also work in Appian for Windows. Difference Details No configurable settings The app uses the device's system settings for language and time zone. There are no in-app settings to configure. Offline evaluation When accessed in the app, offline-enabled interfaces are evaluated by the offline evaluator instead of the server. This applies whether the user is online or offline.
