Appian AI Learning Path

Through realistic use cases, learn how to incorporate AI into your Appian applications.

Appian makes artificial intelligence (AI) approachable and flexible for a variety of applications and industries. Explore this documentation to learn about how AI can supercharge your automation practice.

Why use AI in Appian?

Every day, AI allows people to focus on more critical and meaningful work by delegating routine tasks to intelligent machines and software. Integrating AI capabilities like predictive analytics, natural language processing, or document extraction into your business applications can make your processes faster, more accurate, and more reliable.

Appian AI capabilities example

Appian provides multiple options and methods for using AI in your business. When you use AI in Appian, you:

  • Leverage low-code design and deployment methods: Appian's low-code approach extends to AI. You can configure, train, and deploy AI capabilities without writing code or managing infrastructure.
  • Tap into your data fabric: Appian AI connects directly to your data fabric, giving AI capabilities immediately access to enterprise data without complex integrations.
  • Enable human beings and AI to work together: Appian empowers people and AI to work together. You can design your processes to engage a human being when AI needs supervision or verification.
  • Inherit platform security: Appian AI is built on private AI and architected to protect your data at every step. Record-level security also ensures that users and AI capabilities can only access data they have permission to see.
  • Ship faster: Simple configuration, direct data fabric access, and inherited security mean you can integrate AI into your application quickly, without the overhead of traditional development.

What to consider before adopting AI

Before adopting AI, businesses need to answer some important questions about integration, data privacy, and ongoing maintenance:

  • Is AI the best solution for this challenge? To be worth the investment, AI needs to be carefully integrated into your existing workflows. This type of exploration can take a lot of time and resources to accomplish. Before you begin, it's helpful to determine whether AI is the best fit for your business challenge.
  • What vendor will you use? Once you know how and when you want to use AI, you'll want to evaluate the available options. Be sure to consider how the vendor uses your data, discussed in the next question.
  • How will you keep your data private and within your control? A publicly available AI tool might be appealing because of the low barrier to entry and no need for in-house development. However, these tools might not be best suited for your business if you wish to keep your data private. Once you send business data to these services, you aren't always able to control how it's used.
  • Do you have a developer or contractor to build and maintain models? Custom-built solutions can protect your data, but they can come at a steep cost in terms of hiring a dedicated person or team.

Appian addresses each of these concerns. AI capabilities are low-code, built on private AI, and inherit your existing security—so you don't need a dedicated team or a separate data strategy to get started.

The Appian AI advantage

Appian AI accelerates two phases of the application lifecycle—planning and development, and business process execution—complementing other Appian automation capabilities like process models and RPA.

Planning and development. Appian Composer helps you go from business requirements to a working application faster. Composer turns requirements into an application plan and builds out design objects from that plan or from any ad hoc request.

Business process execution. Once your application is built, Appian AI drives the processes inside it:

  • AI agents reason over tools and data to complete multi-step tasks within your workflows.
  • AI skills bring document extraction, classification, text generation, and translation into your processes without code.
  • Appian MCP Server lets external AI tools connect to your Appian data and business logic directly.
  • AI guardrails enforce content safety policies across all generative AI executions automatically.
