Plug-in Composer

On This Page
The capabilities described on this page are included in Appian's advanced and premium capability tiers. Usage limits may apply.

Plug-in Composer is an AI-powered IntelliJ IDEA extension that turns a natural-language prompt into a complete Appian plug-in project. Generate a new plug-in, modify an existing one, or ask questions about a plug-in's code, all without leaving your integrated development environment (IDE).

This page introduces what Plug-in Composer is, why to use it, and the plug-in types it can generate. To set up the extension, see Install Plug-in Composer. To generate, enhance, and fix plug-ins, see Build with Plug-in Composer.

What is Plug-in Composer?

Plug-in Composer is an AI-powered IntelliJ plug-in that turns plain-English intent into complete Appian plug-in projects — you can generate a new plug-in, modify an existing one, or ask questions about what a plug-in does, all without leaving your IDE. Plug-in Composer is grounded in a curated Appian knowledge base that spans the Plug-in Software Development Kits (SDKs), official documentation, and AppMarket best practices, so every project it produces is standards-compliant across all plug-in types. What used to take SDK setup, dependency resolution, and boilerplate now takes a conversation.

Plug-in Composer's conversations and code generation run on Appian's managed backend, and it consumes AI actions when working on your requests.

Why use Plug-in Composer?

Plug-in Composer accelerates several aspects of plug-in development:

  • Describe it, and Plug-in Composer builds it: From a plain-language requirement, Plug-in Composer produces the plug-in's source code, configuration, and build files, reducing the manual scaffolding needed to start a project.
  • Plug-in Composer acts as your plug-in advisor: Plug-in Composer works out the plug-in type, operations, dependencies, and authentication, and asks clarifying questions before generating, so the output matches your stated intent.
  • Reuse before you rebuild: Plug-in Composer checks the AppMarket first and recommends an existing plug-in that fits, so teams standardize on proven components instead of recreating them.
  • Evolve and fix what you already have: Extend an existing plug-in with a new capability or system, or paste a failing build log to get a root-cause fix, without starting over.
  • Grounded in Appian's own knowledge: Every result draws on a curated knowledge base of the Plug-in Software Development Kits (SDKs), Appian documentation, and AppMarket best practices, and is standards-compliant across all plug-in types.
  • Lower barrier to entry: Teams can build plug-ins without first learning the SDK.
  • Secure credential handling: Plug-in Composer never stores or persists credentials. Plug-in Composer generates configuration placeholders in the project that you populate.

What Plug-in Composer generates

Plug-in Composer generates the following Appian plug-in types:

  • Appian Suite plug-ins:
    • Smart services
    • Functions
    • Servlets
  • Connected system plug-ins
  • Component plug-ins

Plug-in Composer generates plug-ins against the developer's target Appian platform version. For example, a developer targeting Appian 25.4 receives a plug-in compatible with 25.4 rather than a later platform release.

Plug-in Composer generates only Appian plug-in projects. Plug-in Composer does not generate Appian application designs, SAIL interfaces, or process models.

Get started with Plug-in Composer

To use Plug-in Composer, first install the extension in IntelliJ IDEA and authenticate to your Appian site. For prerequisites and setup steps, see Install Plug-in Composer.

After you install Plug-in Composer, you can generate a plug-in from a prompt, reuse existing AppMarket plug-ins, enhance an existing project, and fix issues from an error log. For task instructions, see Build with Plug-in Composer.
