Manage Personas

On This Page
The capabilities described on this page are included in Appian's advanced and premium capability tiers. Usage limits may apply.

The Personas tab in the Plan view is where you define and customize the user roles that interact with your application. You can collaborate with Composer to add or edit personas, or do it yourself. Personas represent groups of users, such as customers, administrators, or system roles, and determine who has access to specific actions within your application plan.

Appian allows you to map existing design objects, such as groups, to personas, making it easier to reuse objects from other applications. Mapping existing groups streamlines development and ensures consistent roles and permissions across applications.

In the Personas tab, you can add, edit, or delete personas.

Manage personas with Composer

When you generate an application plan, Composer automatically generates an initial set of personas based on your requirements.

Tell Composer who needs to interact with your application and it creates or updates personas for you.

With Composer, you can:

  • Add personas: Create new personas with a name and description. For example: Add a persona called Field Technician.
  • Edit personas: Update a persona's name or description. For example: Update the description for the Operations Manager persona.

To manage personas with Composer:

  1. Navigate to the Personas tab.
  2. In the Composer chat panel, describe what you want to add or change.

Tip:  If the chat panel is not displayed, click Composer to open it.

  3. Click .
  4. Review the updates on the Personas tab.

Unsupported actions

Composer is scoped to adding and editing personas. The following actions are not supported:

  • Bulk import: Personas must be provided conversationally. Use the manual add steps to create multiple personas.
  • Deletion: To delete a persona, use the manual delete steps.
  • Cross-tab conflict detection: Composer does not automatically flag if a persona is referenced in Stories or Screens but is missing or inconsistent here. To check for conflicts, ask Composer directly.
