Manage Business Rules

On This Page
The capabilities described on this page are included in Appian's advanced and premium capability tiers. Usage limits may apply.

The Business Rules tab in the Plan view is where you define business logic in clear, straightforward language that everyone on your team can understand. Composer analyzes your application requirements and suggests business rules automatically, letting you focus on refining the core logic that powers your application.

You can review and refine the Composer-suggested list of business rules to verify they align with your team's needs. Once finalized, Composer can generate the corresponding expression rules—each business rule maps to a single expression rule. After generating an expression rule, edit the expressions and define new rule inputs as needed for your use case. All new expression rules are automatically placed in your application's default rules folder, inheriting its security settings.

In the Business Rules tab, you can:

Review the suggested business rules

Open the Business Rules tab to display the list of rules generated by Composer.

Scroll or drag to pan · ⌘+/⌘− to zoom · Esc to closeimages/automation/Business_Rules_Tab.png

The list shows four key details for every business rule:

  • Name: A unique, system-generated name for the rule.
  • Description: A short, high-level summary of the rule's purpose.
  • Natural language logic: The core of the rule, written in a clear, human-readable format. For example: "If the order total is over $100, then apply free shipping." Review the business rule logic by clicking Expand All or expanding each rule individually.
  • Object: Link to the generated expression rule design object. After Composer generates all objects, a link to the corresponding expression rule appears beside each business rule.

Manage business rules with Composer

When you generate an application plan, Composer automatically generates an initial set of business rules based on your requirements.

  • Update business rules: Edit the name, description, or logic of existing rules. For example: Update the discount rule to apply only to orders over $200.
