The Assignment tab of the Configure [Node] Dialog Box allows you to make a particular person or group responsible for a particular task within a process model.
You can select users and groups for task assignment on this tab, or you can use a lane to set task assignment. If a lane assignment is configured, you must select the Override lane assignment for this node checkbox in order to specify different task assignees for this activity.

An activity can be attended (requiring that a user perform a task) or unattended (using system logic to perform the task). Unattended activities are executed in a first-in-first-out order with a lower priority than attended activities and other direct interaction from users. Resources allocated to unattended activities are capped to ensure that the system is responsive to any users interacting with it.
To assign a task to a user or group, select This node will be assigned as a task to a person or a group of people. In the Assign to the following field, select task assignees in one of the following ways.

Best Practice: Appian recommends using groups for task assignment. Group assignments simplify the reassignment of existing responsibilities when personnel changes occur. Group assignments are retained when exporting and importing applications.
Tasks assigned to a user remain assigned to that user even after the user is deactivated. If the user is reactivated, the user will continue to see the task.
The Process History tab does not record when a user accepts a group-assigned task.
When a user accepts a group-assigned task, the other users in the group no longer see the task. If the user is removed from that group, the user no longer sees the task, and the other group members will see the task again with the option of accepting it.
On the Other tab you can configure the same activity to start a number of times. This can be useful when assigning a task to each member of in a group.
The Options section on the Assignment tab allows you to automatically correlate task assignments and assignees, as well as enable or disable email and mobile push notifications to task assignees:

You can specify whether or not the assignees of a task can reject it or reassign it.
Click Set re-assignment privileges for assignees. The following options are displayed.
Select this option to deny an assignee the ability to reject or reassign the task.
Select this option to only allow users to reject the task. Users cannot reassign the task.
Select this option to allow users to reject or reassign the task back to one or more original assignees.
This is the default option and allows users to reject or reassign tasks to anyone.
Users with Manager or higher privileges to the process can always reassign tasks.

Many activities allow you to select whether or not user interaction, such as completing a form, is required by selecting This node will run as an automated activity.
With an automated (unattended) activity, you are given the option of either selecting Run as whoever started this process (the Process Initiator) or Run as whoever designed the process model (the Process Designer). The unattended activity will be executed with the permissions of the selected user.
If an activity is run unattended, the relevant node inputs on the Data tab must have assigned values. The activity must almost complete within 60 minutes or the process will pause by exception.
