Business Process Modeling Notation (BPMN) Artifacts allow process designers to add graphical elements and freeform text within a process model to enhance its clarity. Although artifacts do not affect the execution of a process model, they are useful for documenting the process model and allow other users to understand the flow and other intricacies. Appian supports annotation artifacts.

Annotations are freeform text boxes that can be added anywhere on the designer canvas and linked by association to a flow object. This allows process designers to provide additional information to all viewers of a business process diagram (process model).

Use the following best practices to help other process developers read and maintain your process model.

  • Use annotations to explain the general process flow.
  • Annotate sections of the model that are not instantly readable.
  • Use a connector with an annotation to call out specific complex operations.
