Adding Group Attributes

Creating a custom Group Type allows you to define attributes that can be (or must be) designated when adding a new group. This allows you to differentiate users into different kinds of groups, or improve processes by requiring that certain attributes be set when the group is defined in the system.

To Create Attributes for a Group Type

  1. Click View Group Types in the left navigation of the People view.
  2. Select the group type that you want to assign an attribute.
  3. Click Add Attributes on the toolbar.
  4. Type a name for the attribute.
  5. Select the attribute data type.
  6. (Optional if the attribute takes a User or Group data type) Enter the default value.
  7. Click Add. The Group Type Attributes Page is displayed.

Attribute Data Types

The attributes that you assign can use one of the following data types.

User
An attribute with a user data type associates an Appian user value with each group of the type. For example, a Distribution Center group type might have a Site Supervisor attribute that holds a user name value.
Group
An attribute with a group data type associates another Appian group value with each group of the type. For example, a group created with the Proposal Team group type might take a Sales Region attribute or a Sales Department attribute.
Text
An attribute with a text data type associates plain text information with each group of the type. For example, a Proposal Team group type might have an Issuer attribute. The Issuer attribute could use the text data type to accept the name of the organization that issued the request for proposal.
Number (Integer)
An attribute with a integer data type associates a number value (which doesn't allow decimals) with each group of the type. For example, for a Proposal Team group type, an integer attribute called Priority could represent the relative importance or resource allocation assigned to the group.
Number (Decimal)
An attribute with a decimal data type associates a number value (which does allow decimals) with each group of the type. For example, the Proposal Team group type might use a decimal data type for a Bonus attribute. The Bonus attribute could then represent the overall percentage of the proposed deal that is eligible for compensation for members of a new group created with a Proposal Team group type.
Date
An attribute with a date data type associates a date value with each group of the type. When a group is created to deliver a document on an important date, such as a required submission date, you might assign a date attribute to the group type. For example, a Proposal Team group type might have a required attribute called Due Date that holds a Date data type.
Boolean
An attribute with a Boolean data type associates a true or false value with each group of the type. For example, given a group type of Management Teams, a required Boolean attribute Authorized to Hire might be entered as Yes or No when creating a new group.
